Comparison
Swarmfile vs. Egnyte
Egnyte is a cloud content governance platform, strong on compliance, classification, and hybrid cloud architecture. They serve IT buyers in AEC, life sciences, and financial services. Here's how a content governance platform compares to a streamed, version-controlled drive. Last reviewed August 2026.

Capability
Swarmfile
Egnyte
Native drive mount (macOS / Windows / Linux)
✓FUSE/WinFsp drive letter: apps see a real volume.
✓Windows drive letter + a macOS Desktop App that mounts a drive in Finder (on-demand files, locking).
Browse-without-download for huge files
✓Byte-range streaming from peers or cloud. Open a 200 GB file in seconds.
-Files must sync or cache to local/on-prem storage before apps can read them.
LAN-first P2P mesh
✓Every workstation seeds to peers. One cloud fetch per office.
◐Storage Sync / Smart Cache hybrid appliance caches files locally. No peer-to-peer.
Hybrid cloud + on-prem
✓Optional self-hosted seed node on Pro and above. Bring your own NAS as the warm tier.
✓Core architecture is hybrid cloud; on-prem Storage Sync is a first-class feature.
File-type-aware chunking
✓FastCDC with AEC/M&E profiles. Content-defined deduplication across revisions.
-Generic file transfer. No content-aware chunking.
Zero-stall writes
✓Durable upload queue. Saves never block on network.
◐Writes to local cache are fast; cloud sync is asynchronous but file-level, not block-level.
Collaboration & locking
Capability
Swarmfile
Egnyte
Cooperative file locks
✓
✓Locks any file type (manual + automatic), exposed via a public API.
Revit / SolidWorks worksharing (file locking)
✓No plugin, on Windows: the mount reads the exclusive lock Revit or SolidWorks takes on open and turns it into a hub-enforced claim, so a second Windows machine's open gets a sharing violation, across offices. Cooperative Swarmfile locks work on macOS, Windows and Linux; a byte-range lock API is there for building finer-grained integrations.
-
Per-mount branching + merge
✓Each mount works a branch independently, then merges whole-file changes, with conflict detection, back into main or any parent branch. Merge Requests add a review-and-approve gate, and protected branches can require a configurable number of approvals before a merge lands.
-Content governance platform; no branch/mount-isolation primitive.
Versioning + point-in-time rollback
✓1-3650-day per-user retention. Per-user trash + restore.
✓Built-in versioning with snapshot recovery.
Disconnect-and-resync (Pack & Go)
✓Pinned folders, checkout locks, offline writes, conflict copies.
◐Offline folder sync available. No checkout semantics.
Runner / headless CI on a branch
✓A headless engine watches a branch and runs a job on every matching commit or tag, streaming only the files the job touches instead of a full checkout.
-Content-lifecycle workflow automation exists, but nothing that runs a job on each commit to a branch.
Outbound webhooks (signed events)
✓HMAC-SHA256-signed, SSRF-guarded webhooks for file/branch/merge/ACL/membership events (wire to Slack, Zapier, or a SIEM), plus a personal webhook channel.
◐Audit events forward to a SIEM and the public API exposes an events feed; not per-event signed outbound webhooks across the full event set.

OIDC SSO + SCIM
✓Included on Pro.
◐SSO appears gated to Enterprise Lite and above under Egnyte's current five-tier pricing; SCIM gated even higher. Business alone doesn't appear to include it.
SAML SSO
✓On Enterprise, via an adapter.
◐Same Enterprise Lite+ gating as their OIDC SSO (protocol not distinguished in their published pricing).
Folder & file-level ACLs
✓Allow / deny / inherit with recursive resolution.
✓Granular folder and file permissions. A core strength.
Windows DACL projection
✓
◐NTFS permissions on Storage Sync appliances.
Content classification / data governance
-Not built. On the roadmap.
✓Core product: AI-driven classification, PII detection, policy automation.
DLP / data exfiltration controls
-Share link caps only. Full DLP on roadmap.
✓Content-based DLP policies, watermarking, domain allow-lists.

Block-level integrity verification
✓BLAKE3 per block.
◐File-level integrity.
SOC 2 Type II
-Type I not started (planned).
✓
HIPAA / ITAR / FedRAMP
-Not pursued.
✓HIPAA and ITAR. FedRAMP: Moderate Equivalency + Marketplace listing (EgnyteGov), not full FedRAMP Authorization.
Legal hold / eDiscovery
-Planned.
✓
Audit log
✓Per-tenant, plus a unified activity feed with CSV export (shipped).
✓Comprehensive audit trail with SIEM forwarding.

Where Swarmfile is stronger today
- Byte-range streaming, not sync. A 200 GB point cloud opens in seconds on Swarmfile and only streams the tiles you view. On Egnyte, that file needs to cache to local or on-prem storage first. Different architecture, different latency ceiling for large files in desktop apps.
- LAN-first P2P on every plan. Every workstation participates. No appliance to install. One cloud fetch serves the whole office. Egnyte's on-prem Storage Sync is an appliance you buy and manage.
- SSO, SCIM, LDAP on Pro. Included at $25/seat. No enterprise upgrade required for the identity stack you need at 25+ seats.
- Erasure coding + block-level integrity. Reed-Solomon 10+4 and BLAKE3 per block. Two layers of data protection that aren't in Egnyte's architecture.
- Per-mount branching with automatic merge. Per-mount branching lets a team diverge on a branch and merge back automatically, with conflict detection. Egnyte has no equivalent: it governs one tree, it doesn't fork one.
- Built for creative tools, not just documents. Swarmfile is tuned for Resolve, Premiere, ArcGIS, Revit: tools that demand POSIX paths and random byte-range reads. Egnyte is optimized for Office documents and PDFs in regulated industries.
- Multi-vertical from day one. Software, games, M&E, geospatial and AEC in one platform. Egnyte serves AEC but doesn't address M&E or geospatial workflows.

If Egnyte already fits how you work, keep it. If you want a mounted drive with version control, locking, and LAN delivery in one place, start a trial.
